Sikh Population in Kerala up 34%. Christians 1%, Muslims 12%, Hindus 2%.

The 2011 census data is now public. It’s a treasure trove of information, especially if you compare it with earlier census data, starting with 2001. We are just getting started and decided to first see how religious communities are growing (or not) in Kerala. We will be updating as we go along, you can see our calculations worksheet here. If you would like to find specific data correlation, please leave them in the comments.

Census Data 2011 and 2001 (Religion in Kerala)
Census Data 2011 and 2001 (Religion in Kerala)

People preferring not to state religion has increased the most in percentage terms, 251%. In actually numbers, more than a million new Muslims were added to population in the 10 years (2001 to 2011).

Christians doesn’t seem to listening to their religious sermons and not making enough babies. Just an increase of 1.3% over the 10 year period. This could also be due to migration.

Jains seem to be the only group that doesn’t want to increase their numbers in Kerala. Smaller groups like Jews are stated in others but I don’t think the growth in others have do with increase in number of Jews. If more data on the various others was available, I am sure the Jewish population too would be on the decline.

Buddhist population is also growing steadily, an increase of 134%.

Next analysis we are planning to do is where most of the Religions are concentrated in state. If you have other analysis or correlations you would want us to do, please mention in the comments or drop us an email.
